John Augustine Snodgrass

John Augustine Snodgrass passed away peacefully at home on March 9, 2026, after a difficult nine month battle with cancer. John was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was born November 9, 1996 in Baytown, Texas. He came into the world with a partner in crime, his twin brother Raymond. Though different in temperament, together they kept their parents on their toes in their early years with lots of shenanigans. Growing up John was an active Boy Scout, earning the rank of Eagle Scout in high school. He also played sports, the trumpet, and participated in the Junior Legion of Mary at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. At St. John’s he also served as an altar server and lector and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, John Paul Council #7206. Some of his happiest childhood memories included hiking, camping, and sightseeing on the many adventurous trips all over the U.S. (and beyond!) that he took with his family. He was always very proud of his Slovak heritage. In the third grade, he really took off with his love for reading, even packing a carry-on suitcase full of nothing but books to take on a trip overseas. He carried his love for reading along with hiking, camping, fishing, and cooking into adulthood. John graduated from Sterling High School in 2016, earned his Associate degree from Lee College in Baytown, TX, and continued his studies at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. From there, he worked in IT and logistics. He spent his free time with family and friends. He was always up for a board game night or a sibling dinner especially when all five siblings could be wrangled together at one time. He also loved hanging out with his many rambunctious nieces and nephews. John fought bravely during his illness and made visible the Body of Christ in the way he brought so many people together in prayer and sacrificial love. His gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. With heartfelt gratitude, the family extends their deepest appreciation to the many who accompanied John during his nine-month journey—including his faithful four-legged companions Sam and Kylo and all who have offered prayers on John’s behalf and for our family. John was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Raymond Lloyd Snodgrass and Theresa Kunze Snodgrass, his maternal grandparents, Ján Kurta and Anna Šušová Kurtová, uncle Mark Snodgrass, aunt Marta Kurta, and cousin Joshua McClure. He is survived by parents Thomas and Barbora Snodgrass, siblings Vanessa Johnson and husband Casey, Alexandra Thomas and husband Don, Dominika Ramos and husband Joseph, and Raymond Snodgrass, as well as nephews and nieces, Henry, Theodore, Louis, George, Benny, Blaise, Gemma, Leo, Rosy, Bruno, and Felix. Evensong for the faithful departed will be held at six o’clock in the evening on Friday, the 13th of March, at St. Mary’s Seminary, 9845 Memorial Drive, Houston. Immediately following evensong, all are invited to join the family during a wake with light refreshments. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will take place at half-past nine o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 14th of March, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham, 7809 Shadyvilla Lane, Houston. A Solemn Requiem Mass will be offered at ten o’clock in the morning following the recitation of the Holy Rosary. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, 24496 Highway 159 East, Hempstead, at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following at the Waller Civic Center, 3007 Waller Street. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests memorial contributions in memory of John to be directed to St. Mary’s Seminary.
