Virginia A. Breuninger

Virginia A. Breuninger died on Wednesday May 20, 2020 with Wendy, her daughter, holding her hand. Born February 27, 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Frank (Francis) R. Johnston and Katherine Matilda Cox, Virginia was the older sister of Frank R. Johnston Jr. She attended Temple University in Philadelphia on a performance piano scholarship but changed majors to English midway. She also obtained a teaching certificate from Temple. She taught first in Philadelphia and then in Lansdale until she decided to assist her husband in his medical practice from 1969 to 1992. Virginia moved to Lansdale, Pennsylvania in 1951 when she married Dr. Charles Breuninger. She lived on North Broad street until 1992 when she and “DOC” moved to Chestertown, Maryland for retirement. In 2015 she moved with Doc to Houston, Texas to be near her daughter Wendy and granddaughter Jacqueline for health reasons. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and spouse Dr. Charles F. Breuninger. Virginia is survived by her daughter Wendy, Wendy’s husband, Evan Bauman, and their daughter Jacqueline. Virginia loved boating, photography, writing a column in the local paper on arts performances, teaching children, playing the piano, and singing in the Presbyterian Church. She was passionate about encouraging others, especially women, to achieve their full potential. She had a deep interest in family and community history and took delight in gathering and sharing important and interesting stories with her friends and family. Always capable and caring, her strong opinions might cause some distress, but her loyalty to her family and concern for their welfare were her crowning strengths. Her wisdom and delight in learning and growing as a person and encouraging others to do the same will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her best. A service will be held at the Houston National Cemetery where she will join her husband. A special thanks to the fellowship of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church on Timberline Drive, Houston, including Scott Harbison Pastor for welcoming her and her husband “Doc” to Houston in 2015 from her small town home in Maryland.
