Marjorie McConn

Margie McConn, born October 19, 1928 in Houston, Texas passed away peacefully on Monday, August 9, 2021. Margie married the love of her life, Jim McConn, Former Mayor of Houston, on June 21, 1947. Together they had five sons and one daughter whom she devoted her life to. She enjoyed following their sports and activities, trips to Lake McQueeney, swimming in the backyard pool and Sunday dinners together. Margie became the first lady of Houston when Jim was elected mayor in 1978. She was a native Houstonian and was so proud to represent Houston as the first lady. She also helped Jim in his home building business using her interior decorating talents, which he claimed were the added touch that closed the deal. Margie had many good friends, especially in her tennis group, bridge and poker sessions, and her Briargrove Park walking group. She enjoyed the ladies whom she knew in the Assistance League of Houston and being able to serve the greater community. Margie was a devoted mother of six, grandmother of twenty-one, and great-grandmother of twenty-three. She loved them all dearly and especially loved when they visited her. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at the Farrington of Tanglewood for their many years of care for "Marmie", as she was known to her grandchildren. They were kind and loving and we appreciate them greatly. Margie was preceded in death by her husband of almost fifty years, James Joseph McConn, her parents, Louis and Florence Gougenheim, and her brother, Milton Gougenheim and her dearly cherished brother and sisters-in-law. She is survived by her six children: Jim McConn and his wife, Cathy; Mike McConn; Kevin McConn and his wife, Georgia; Melissa Sacra and her husband, Mark; Terry McConn and his wife, Kim; and Andy McConn and his wife, Beverly. She is also survived by her forty-four grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Fr. Clark Sample and concelebrated by Fr. Wayne Wilkerson at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road in Houston, Texas. Honorary pallbearers are her grandsons: Chris McConn, Jimmy McConn, Andy McConn, Tim McConn, Brian McConn, Mark Sacra, Stephen Sacra, Ellis McConn, Terrence McConn, Justin McConn, Hunter McConn and Drew McConn. The Rite of Committal will follow at Forest Park Lawndale cemetery in Houston, Texas at a later date. Donations may be made in her memory to St. Michael's Catholic Church, St. Thomas High School or Strake Jesuit High School or the charity of your choice.
