James Sidney Griffin

James “Jim” Sidney Griffin, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, born on July 26, 1934, went to be with his Lord on October 21, 2021. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney H. Griffin and Blanche O. Griffin; and brothers Robert L. Griffin and Rolf R. Griffin. He will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of more than 51 years, Linda A. Griffin; his daughter, Kim Woodruff, her husband, Justin, and their two children, Luke and Claire, all of Houston; his daughter, Cindy Griffin and her husband Chris Maden of Houston; and his son Stephen Griffin and his husband, Jairo Nuñez, of Chicago, Illinois. Jim grew up in Franklin, Texas and attended Franklin High School before joining the United States Air Force. In the Air Force, he was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, which began a life of travel across the world. He eventually moved to Santa Monica, California and attended Santa Monica College and worked for Systems Development Corporation who sent him to work for their offices in Saigon, Vietnam during the height of the Vietnam War. He met and married his wife, Linda, while working in Saigon. Work took Jim and his family from Vietnam to Thailand, Hawaii, and eventually back to his home state of Texas where he attended University of Houston and worked for many years at Houston Lighting & Power and later at NASA supporting the Space Shuttle program. Jim loved the outdoors and enjoyed playing golf in Houston and Lake Tahoe, volunteering at Bear Creek in Houston and Eagle Valley in Carson City during his retirement. At Bear Creek, he was recognized for getting two holes-in-one, a major distinction for an amateur golf player. He enjoyed spending time on the outdoor deck and enjoying nature in both Houston and Lake Tahoe. Most of all, he loved listening to his wife, Linda, sing. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 1, 2021 at Second Baptist Church, in the Hankamer Chapel, 6400 Woodway Drive, in Houston, Texas. Following the funeral service, Jim will be laid to rest at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, Texas with a reception with the family will immediately to follow. The reception will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Joseph J. Earthman Generations, 234 Westcott Street in Houston, Texas. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Stephen Griffin, Jairo Nuñez, Chris Maden, Justin Woodruff, Tim Tate, and Daniel Tate. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
